Users worked through a SaaS interface\u2014dashboards, workflows, integrations\u2014which sat on top of systems of record holding the underlying data.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AI is compressing this. Autonomous agents increasingly do the work directly, squeezing the traditional UI layer as value shifts in two directions\u2014up to the AI layer, and down to the systems of record that agents rely on. We think of this as the &#8220;thin middle&#8221; squeeze.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SaaS businesses whose main value is their interface\u2014rather than their data or workflow integration\u2014face the most pressure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span class=\"TextRun SCXW266793836 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266793836 BCX8\">What AI <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266793836 BCX8\">d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266793836 BCX8\">oes and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266793836 BCX8\">d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266793836 BCX8\">oesn&#8217;t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266793836 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266793836 BCX8\">d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266793836 BCX8\">isrupt<\/span><\/span><\/h2><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AI makes it significantly easier to build features. What once took months of engineering can now be prototyped in days.\u00a0This\u00a0represents\u00a0a genuine leap forward in innovation and the speed of product launches.\u00a0However,\u00a0AI\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0lower barriers to:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Distribution<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014 Reaching customers at scale still needs sales infrastructure, brand recognition, and market presence. You\u00a0can&#8217;t\u00a0prompt-engineer your way to enterprise relationships.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Data<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ownership<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014 Proprietary, domain specific\u00a0datasets built over years of customer activity remain hard to replicate. AI models are only as useful as the data behind them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Regulatory embedding<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014 Deep compliance knowledge, government relationships, and certification processes take time to build. AI\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0shortcut this.<\/span><\/li><li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Customer trust<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014 Enterprise buyers\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0swap mission-critical systems for a clever new feature. What\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0seeing is the opposite: companies using AI to reinforce their strengths and move faster on product development.\u00a0We&#8217;re\u00a0seeing this pattern repeat. Businesses with proprietary data, embedded workflows, and real domain\u00a0expertise\u00a0are using AI to extend their lead, not defend against erosion.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even Anthropic, at \u201cEnterprise Agents\u201d briefing on 24 Feb 2026, highlighted collaboration with leading SaaS companies to further accelerate AI monetisation features.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We are however mindful that the advent of AI and increased cost of inferencing (querying the underlying data) may lead to SAAS companies having to re-engineer their revenue models.\u00a0Possible changes\u00a0could include a move from seat based or per using pricing to a model that captures the value of the work being done and the cost of compute to carry it out.
